Ex-Dockers shine in WA All-Stars game

BROUGHT TO YOU BYNAB

WESTERN Australia's brightest young under-18 talent pulled off a 17-point win over its older WAFLW opposition in the state's NAB AFLW All-Stars match.

Nuggety forward Nyra Anderson thrived in the wet conditions at Joondalup in a best-on-ground display, throwing her body into packs with abandon and setting up several goals in the 4.6 (30) to 1.7 (13) victory.

The 18-year-old was eligible for last year's NAB AFLW Draft, and did all she could to boost her chances of selection in this year's edition on October 6.

She was joined by a pair of former Dockers among the best players afield, with Tiah Haynes (2017-18) and Sarah Garstone (2020) among the best for the WAFLW All Stars.

Haynes was busy in the midfield and then up forward as the rain dissipated in the fourth quarter, while Garstone's strong hands, class and composure shone through in an under-the-pump defence.

Fellow WAFLW All-Star Tessa Doumanis booted her side's only goal and could have finished with a handful if not for inaccurate kicking, given her ability to find dangerous space and read the play well.

The under-18 All Stars side was essentially the state academy team, and their consistent training throughout the year shone through with some composed passages of play and smart decision-making.

Twins Brianna and Mikayla Hyde have made a name for themselves for their fearless physical play over the past two NAB AFLW Under-18 Championships, and it was on show again on Saturday.

Brianna was steady in defence while Mikayla was busy further up the ground.

NAB AFLW Draft Combine invitee Maggie MacLachlan had a few long-range shots at goal on the run, and fellow Combine participant Mikayla Morrison showed glimpses of class in the middle.

Tall defender Amy Franklin isn't eligible for the draft until next year, but caught the eye with her composure and athleticism.
