Fourth to a flag for Yeronga, Lions dominate awards

YERONGA South Brisbane has put an emphatic exclamation point on its season, romping to a 47-point victory over Coolangatta in the QAFLW Grand Final.

The Devils didn't have one outstanding quarter to seal the deal, they just dried up the Bluebirds' scoring while kicking a few goals of their own each term in the 8.8 (56) to 1.3 (9) win.

Playing for Coolangatta, Gold Coast's Paige Parker was her side's only goalkicker, and it was the first major of the match.

Courtney McDonnell and Lexia Edwards kicked two each for Yeronga – who won the flag after finishing fourth – while Sam Virgo and Lauren Arnell also hit the scoreboard.

Regardless of the result, it was an improved season for Coolangatta under coach and former Carlton head of women's footy Nicole Graves, having finished sixth of eight teams last year.

Lions dominate QAFLW awards

Brisbane Lions trio Jordan Zanchetta (playing for Yeronga), Belle Dawes (Maroochydore) and key forward recruit Taylor Smith (Bond University) tied for the QAFLW best and fairest award.

Rounding out the top five was fellow Lion Jade Ellenger (Coorparoo) and NAB AFLW Draft Combine invitee Lucy Single (Bond University).

The leading goalkicker for the QAFLW was also a tie, with Smith and Gold Coast midfielder Jamie Stanton (Coorparoo) finishing on 15 goals each.

The coaches-voted MVP was also dominated by Brisbane players, with the top four made up of Cathy Svarc (Wilston Grange), Emily Bates (Yeronga), Ally Anderson (Coorparoo) and Lily Postlethwaite (Maroochydore).
