Overlooked utility gets late lifeline from Freo

FREMANTLE has finalised its 2021 list for a second time, replacing Jess Trend with Subiaco's Maggie MacLachlan.

Trend joined the inactive list last week, with the Dockers saying an opportunity outside of football would limit Trend's preparation for the 2021 season.

MacLachlan, 18, gets her chance at the top level after a strong WAFLW season playing under former Fremantle player and current assistant coach Amy Lavell.

Previously a defender, MacLachlan moved forward in 2020 to great effect, booting both the Lions' goals in the team's WAFLW Grand Final loss.

AFLW Draft wrap: Biggest winners and surprises

Nat Edwards, Mel Hickey and Sarah Black wrap up the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft

She had been invited to Western Australia's NAB AFLW Draft Combine, but with just eight picks on offer, missed out in the NAB AFLW Draft.

"We’re really excited to get Maggie. She’s always had the ability to intercept mark and has really good foot skills. This year she took her game to another level playing league for Subiaco where she featured at both ends of the ground," Fremantle coach Trent Cooper told the club website.

"She’s a mid-sized player who will give us options at either end of the ground and has really improved her endurance quite remarkably this year. Her fitness is good enough to play AFLW in round one if needed.

"She has a bubbly personality and is really popular with our girls already. She was taught by Kara Antonio at SEDA and Hayley Miller is her favourite player, so she gets to work with a couple of her idols as well."
