IT WAS the call that changed her life.
Ahead of Saturday’s NAB AFLW Grand Final, inaugural Adelaide premiership coach, Bec Goddard, has revealed she received a surprise phone call from four-time Hawthorn premiership coach Alastair Clarkson during Grand Final week in 2017.
The advice he gave helped to inspire the Crows' six-point win over the Lions to claim a historic AFLW flag.
"I was driving home from training on Grand Final week and I had a phone call from a number I’d never seen before," Goddard told the Cutting Oranges podcast.
"Normally I wouldn’t answer it, private numbers scare me, but it’s Grand Final week so I thought I better get it because it could be one of the girls broken down or broken a leg, I better answer it.
"This voice on the other end said, 'G'day Bec, it’s Clarko'.

"I was like, Clarko, Clarko, I’m a proud passionate paid-up Hawthorn member and I’m thinking 'Oh my God, Alastair Clarkson’s calling me'.
"And he says I just want to talk to you about your defence against Brisbane in the Grand Final, I watched your last game against them. I want to talk about how you’re going to set up."
